Prison Island
About the tour
Prison Island is one of the nearest islands to Stone Town – just about 15 minutes by boat. It is also known as Changuu Island, and its original use was a prison for renegade slaves punished by their master, an Arab landowner. Later it was taken over by a quarantine station by the British army, and another prison was built on it but never used.
Today the island is an interesting destination for a day trip, with a nature trail, a beach and giant land tortoises, some of which are over 100 years old.
You can also visit the popular Nakupenda Beach
Vanishing Nakupenda Island is a beautiful sand strip in the middle of the ocean that disappears at high tide. A true paradise island!
Only a 15-minute boat ride from Prison Island, it is a perfect addition to your adventure.
Relax on the beautiful white sand beach and swim in the crystal clear turquoise waters.
